Power outages

Unplanned outages

The electricity supply can be interrupted by unplanned outages. These can be caused by things like severe weather (for example, wind and lightning), birds and animals, and motor vehicle accidents.

Generally, the network distributor, TasNetworks, is not required to pay compensation for damage resulting from an unplanned electricity outage if the outage was outside its control. However, if you believe TasNetworks caused or contributed to damage from an outage, you can make a claim through TasNetworks.

If you are making an insurance claim after an unplanned outage, and you need a letter of support, you can request one directly from TasNetworks.

Planned outages

The electricity supply can also be interrupted for repair or maintenance work on the electricity network. Energy companies must follow strict rules about notifying customers about planned outages.

TasNetworks cannot guarantee the supply of electricity all of the time. If you need uninterrupted power, you should consider getting a generator or battery backup.

Eligible customers can receive payments depending on the length of outages and how often they happen. These are called Guaranteed Service Level (GSL) payments. They are automatically applied to your energy account according to specific rules. You do not have to request GSL payments.
