Opening and closing accounts

It is your responsibility to let your energy retailer know when you move in or out of a property.

Opening accounts

When you open an energy account:

  • you must provide your name, address and identification, and you must ensure that the meter is accessible
  • let your retailer know if you hold any concessions or whether life support equipment is used at the property
  • make sure everyone who needs access to the account is either named or authorised on it
  • pay the reconnection fee, if it is required.

Closing accounts

When you close your account:

  • give as much notice as possible to your retailer to process the request
  • confirm your contact details for the final bill
  • if you’re moving to a new property, consider whether to request a connection from the retailer for your new property
  • pay a de-energisation fee, if it is required.

You can be held responsible for electricity use at a property while the account is in your name, even if you no longer live there. You may also be responsible for electricity use if you move into a property and use power when you have not yet established an account with a retailer.
