Moving house

When you move house it is vital that you contact your electricity or gas retailer to advise the date that you want the supply disconnected from your name.

If you move house and do not have the supply disconnected from your name, you will remain liable for the gas or electricity consumed until a new customer is assigned to the address or when you request disconnection.

If you are the contracted customer in a share house, you will be liable for the payment of bills so long as the supply remains in your name.

There is a regulated fee applicable to the disconnection/connection of your electricity supply.  Your energy retailer will generally charge the meter read fee to the customer who first contacts it either to request disconnection or connection.  This is to avoid, where possible, the need to undertake both a final and a start meter read.  This will depend on the timing between a customer moving out and a new customer moving into a property.
